Trauma doesn’t look the same for everyone. It can be a failed relationship, an act of violence, or a natural disaster. Traumas also differ in their severity, and their effects on us. They all hurt, and you may wonder if you’ll ever find a way out of it.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is considered an effective treatment for trauma by a host of international organizations, including the American Psychiatric Association, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the World Health Organization. It started in 1989, when psychologist Francine Shapiro realized that rapid eye movements helped lessen her own negative emotions while walking through a park. She spent years developing, practicing and studying the effects of the therapeutic procedure, eventually calling it EMDR in 1991. Central Ohio had early adopters of the technique and became a center for EMDR leadership.
Bethany is a Level II trained EMDR therapist and experienced in treating childhood trauma, recent events (such as auto accidents), PTSD and war veterans. Using EMDR since 1998, she has found this technique significantly speeds up the healing process.
